"A largely-attended meeting was held at the Literary Institute on Tuesday evening, in connection with the Mutual Improvement Society, for the purpose of discussing 'Women's Suffrage.' [...] Mrs. McLaren spoke at length in favour of the enfranchisement of women. Her speech, which was very telling, was frequently applauded [...]." Her speech was followed by an address by Mr. Cecil de Salis, who, opposing the motion, quoted from the speech of a female American women's right activist.
