Abstract

Lady Aberdeen presided over the opening meeting of the final council meeting of the Women's Liberal Federation at Holborn Town Hall. On this occasion Lady Henry Somerset moved a resolution "[t]hat this Council expresses approval of the appointment of a Departmental Committee for the reception of evidence regarding the new Cantonment Acts in India." The speech of Lady Somerset is quoted at length. Mrs. Stewart Brown seconded the resolution, lauding Lady Somerset's eloquence. Her statement is quoted fully, too. Elizabeth Andrew spoke about their first hand experiences on this issue which they acquired on their travels to India. Lady Calisle then expressed her gratitude for the contributions on this issue to the conference. Mrs. Sheldon Amos then supported the amendment, before it was voted on and carried. Lady Aberdeen then concluded this section. Next, Mrs. Hughes and Miss Jenkins addressed the issue of Welsh Disestablishment, before several women participated in the passing of a resolution on Arbitration. Finally, Harriette Colenso moved a resolution in support of the Zulu people, condemning the British conduct towards them, before Mrs. Price Hughes terminated the meeting with a vote of thanks to the president, Lady Aberdeen.
