Abstract

1) Education in Ireland: At a schoolteachers' and educators' meeting in Dublin, two women give papers "on some of the points specially calling for attention in regard to the present condition of Intermediate Education." At a subsequent meeting of schoolmasters, which female teachers were for the first time allowed to attend, "Miss Alice Oldham read a paper on the 'Teaching of Science in Schools.'" 2) Suffrage: At the annual meeting of the Edinburgh National Society, several women speak. The report, read by Eliza Wigham, is summarised, and an excerpt from Mrs. M'Laren's address is included. 3) Poor Law Guardians: Several women, including Laura Ormiston Chant, give addresses at a drawing-room meeting in Kensington. 4) Temperance Work: Mrs. Scholefield speaks at a meeting of temperance advocates with the Bishop of Newcastle. 5) Women and the St. Pancras Total Abstinence Association: Margaret B. Lucas speaks on temperance. Her address is summarised, and speeches by three other women are mentioned. 6) The Moral Reform Union: Mrs. Meredith speaks on the "Claim of Women to take the direction of women's work in Institutions of which women and children are inmates." Reproduces the address at some length. 7) York Women's Liberal Association: "Mrs. Edward Smithson read a paper on the new Married Women's Property Act."
