At a reception in the context of the National Union of Women Workers, the Lady Mayoress Mrs. Meek gives a welcome, and an anecdote is told by Mr. Steinthal about his endeavour to arrange for a woman (Mrs. Chapman) to give an anti-slavery lecture, "but when he mentioned it to most advanced and liberal-minded people of the town, the bare idea of a woman speaking in public appeared to them to be perfectly shocking!" Steinthal instead held a drawing-room meeting at which he asked Chapman questions, to which she answered at length, effectively giving her lecture.
