At a well-attended Drawing-room Meeting held under the auspices of the Moral Reform Union, and hosted in the home of Mrs. Browne, several women spoke against the employment of children in theatres, highlighting the negative consequences that resulted from this practice, such as young-age drinking, physical exertion, and long working days. Speakers included Millicent Fawcett, who gave the opening speech, Laura Ormiston Chant, who, in a characteristic speech, ridiculed the attempted justification of the present state of things, Mrs. Steward (of Ongar), who spoke briefly, but with deep impressiveness, Miss Sharman Crawford, Miss E.A. Walker, and others.
