Abstract

1) Suffrage: At a "very influential meeting in support of the Bill," Mrs. Fawcett thanks the men "who had given so much assistance to this movement." Lydia Becker moves a vote of thanks. Upon seconding the vote, Mrs. Hallet makes some remarks. "On February 18th, a lecture was given on Women's Suffrage by Miss Becker to the members of Haslingden Industrial Corporation Society." "On March12th a Drawing-room Meeting was held by invitation of lady Goldsmid in her house in Portman Square. Mrs. Fawcett [and] Miss Emily Davies [...] were among the speakers." "On March 1st, Miss Christina Bremner of Hull read a paper in the Northumberland Hall, Newcastle, on 'A Reasonable Reform: a Plea for Women's Suffrage.' The paper was well argued and sparkling." "Under the auspices of the Central National Society, [...] several meetings and lectures have been given in the provinces." Florence Balgarnie lectures twice on "Women and the Vote." 2) Meetings for Women Poor Law Guardians - Southport: "Mrs. Sherbrooke recently read a paper upon [the subject of the return of women as poor law guardians] at a mothers' meeting, and also at a meeting of the Mutual Improvement Association." Chelsea: "Miss Lidgett, Miss Twining and Mrs. Brandreth [...] were the speakers" at a drawing-room meeting. 3) Political Societies - Women's Liberal Associations - Bristol: Two women speak at a drawing-room meeting. Bradford: "The Countess of Aberdeen presided, and was loudly cheered." Her remarks on women's political duty are briefly summarised. Mrs. W. P. Byles and Mrs. Osler are also mentioned as speakers. Edinburgh: Four women are listed as speakers at "a preliminary meeting of ladies favourable to the formation of a Women's Liberal Association." Also mentions a second public meeting which Lady Aberdeen addresses. Glasgow: The Countess of Aberdeen speaks on "the duty of women in the political, social and moral questions of the day" at an inaugural meeting of a Women's Liberal Association. Women's Liberal Unionist Associations: The Duchess of St. Albans's and Mrs. Leonard Courtney's remarks at a meeting are briefly paraphrased. Dorothea Roberts "made a vigorous speech." 4) The Royal Irish Association for Promoting the Training and Employment of Women: At the annual general meeting, the secretary, Miss Croker, reads the report, of which an excerpt is inlcuded. Proposing the adoption of the report, Mrs. Power Lalor makes remarks which are extensively reproduced. 5) Women and Peace: Miss P. H. Peckover is named as one of the principal speakers at a drawing-room meeting.
