Abstract

1) St. Helen's: On the occasion of the first annual soirée of the Women's Liberal Federation at St. Helen's, Mrs. Eva McLaren spoke about the aims, goals and achievements of the Federation and the manner how their agenda was to be achieved. After that Miss Conybeare addressed the Irish question, and moved that the seat of St. Helen's should be filled by a supporter of Mr. Gladstone in order to support the reversal of the policies installed by the present government. This motion was seconded by Miss Constance Wubbe and Miss Kate Ryley, who both once more highlightet the importance of speedily solving the current issues in Ireland by gaining Home Rule for the country. 2) Southport: "Last Week Miss Conybeare gave an address on the Olphert evictions. [...] Miss Conybeare, who has just returned from Ireland, characterised the trial of the Gweedore prisoners as conducted in a scandalous manner. She described the Olphert estate, its acreage and value, how the rents were paid, the wholesale evictions, and the heart-rending scenes she had witnessed of men and women hunted down."
