Abstract

1) Morpeth and Wansbeck: Mrs. Byles gave a lecture on "Ireland as a Nation" at a meeting of the Women's Liberal Association, held at Morpeth Town Hall. 2) Newcastle and Gateshead Women's Liberal Association: At the annual meeting of the Association, Mrs. Byles spoke of the connection of women and politics, and emphasised the positive influence women could exert. 3) Ecclestall Women's Liberal Association: "At a public meeting of this Association, held last week, Mrs. Newton [...] gave a graphic account of a visit lately paid to Carna, in Connemara, one of the most poverty-stricken districts in the west of Ireland. [...] An appeal was made by Mrs. Newton on behalf of the many forsaken, desolate places which are to be found in various parts of Ireland." 4) Socialism in Women's Colleges: "There was a debate the other day between Lady Margaret, and Somerville Hall, Oxford. The motion, 'That this house approves of the Socialistic tendencies of the present age,' was carried by a large majority."
