After a drawing-room meeting of the Women's Union at Mrs. Hughes Williams at Anerley, followed by a committee meeting , a social gathering followed which "presented features of more than ordinary interest" as "many women of the working and middle classes had been invited, in order to discuss with the members the objects of the Society and the Questions of Suffrage." At the beginning, Mrs. Massingberd "in a simple and effective address" spoke about the evils arising out of female economic dependency. She was the followed by Miss Florence Bourne, who gave an address on "The Position of Women in India." "The speeches were listened to with great attention throughout, the women expressing themselves highly pleased with what they heard of the Society and its aims."
