Abstract

1) Conferences of Head Mistresses: Three women speak at a meeting held in the context of the "annual conference of head mistresses of endowed and proprietary schools." 2) Suffrage: At the annual meeting of the Central Society, Lydia Becker speaks on the prospect of gaining more parliamentary support for female suffrage through new M.P.s, and Maye Ashton Dilke, Isabella Tod and Florence Balgarnie speak in moving or supporting resolutions. Miss Maclean: Several women speak at drawing-room meetings in Edinburgh. 3) Some Poor-Law Questions: At a meeting of the Somerville Club, several letters are read, Mrs. Smith James reads a paper on "habitual paupers" versus "the respectable poor," which is briefly summarised. The subsequent discussion is reproduced. 4) Women's Protective and Provident League: The Countess of Portsmouth presides at the League's annual meeting and makes a speech on trade unions, which is briefly reproduced. 5) Political Associations - Women's Political League: Eliza Orme speaks on "the formation of the association and [gives] an exposition of its aims." Her account and a second female speaker's remarks are paraphrased. 6) Miss Whately's Cairo Mission: At a meeting regarding the funding of the mission, Mary Louisa Whately speaks "at some length [on] the rise and progess of her work." 7) Miscellaneous - Somerville Club: Mentions two debates opened by women, one on political associations, and the second on "Man versus the State." Mrs. Steward at Southport: Report on two occasions at which Steward gives addresses, one being an award ceremony and the second a "drawing meeting" [sic, drawing-room?].
