Abstract

1) Women's Liberal Associations - Hornsey: Lady Sandhurst presides at the inaugural meeting, and she and Mrs. Bryant deliver addresses. Whitehaven: "Miss Macdonell gave an address on 'Women's Political Work.'" Ashton-Under-Lyne: "Miss F. Balgarnie lectured on 'the Duty of Women as Citizens and Voters.' Subsequent speakers were Miss Annie Reyner, Mrs. John Green, Mrs. John Kelsal and Mrs. Bostock." Refers to the Women's Gazette for reports of several meetings. A paper on "The International Council of Women held last March in Washington" is mentioned, as well as another lecutre by Florence Balgarnie on women's suffrage. Kettering: "An address was given by Mrs. Eva McLaren upon the Women's Liberal Associations." 2) Women's Liberal Unionist Associations - Scotland: At a drawing-room meeting in Glasgow, "Mrs. Fawcett was the chief speaker." Her remarks on women's political influence and Home Rule are summarised. "An address was given by Mrs. Blake [on] 'Life in the West of Ireland.'" Miss Richardson is mentioned as "the chief speaker" at another meeting. 3) Women's Suffrage Society Meetings: Report on a general meeting of the National Society for the purpose of passing new rules. Several prominent women, inlcuging Millicent Fawcett, Lydia Becker, Caroline Biggs, Frances Power Cobbe, and Laura Ormiston Chant, are mentioned to move amendments or to speak otherwise. Nottingham: Mrs. Cowen and Miss Wright give speeches at an "At Home." Briefly paraphrased a reply given by Cowen to a male speaker, and announces another meeting which is to be addressed by Mrs. S. B. McLaren. Edinburgh: The speech of Louisa Stevenson, who also reads the annual report for the National Association, is reproduced at some lenght. Addresses by Alice Scatcherd and Laura Ormiston Chant at the meeting, as well as a subsequent drawing-room meeting, are mentioned. 4) Ladies in Parliamentary Elections: At a "large meeting at which Mrs. Gladstone presided, [the] principal speakers were Mrs. Gladstone herself, Mrs. Cobb, Miss Orme and Lady Sandhurst." 5) Ladies as County Councillors: The Countess of Aberdeen presides at a meeting, "consisting chiefly of ladies," and makes a speech which is extensively reproduced. Louisa Twining is mentioned as another speaker. 6) National Vigilance Association: Laura Ormiston Chant speaks on the Association's work, and Millicent Fawcett moves a resolution. 7) Physical Education for Girls: Dr. Eliza W. Dunbar speaks on "the growth and maintenance of muscular tissue" and "the Swedish system." Emily Sturge also speaks in favour of the latter. 8) Lectures by Women: Lists lectures delivered by women including Millicent Fawcett, Mrs. Bryant, and Laura Ormiston Chant. Eliza Orme's lecture on "Trades Unionism for Women" is reproduced in detailed summary. 9) Miscellaneous - Dress Reform: At a "meeting of ladies," Lady Harberton speaks on "the inconvenience and danger of the present style of dress. Miss Sherman Crawford reviewed the absurdity of recent changes of fashion, and Mrs. T. Taylor read a paper on the moral side of the question." Peace and Arbitration: A drawing-room meeting is convened to hear "addresses from Mr. and Mrs. Bowles." "Mrs. Bowles made a specially interesting speech, and, together with her husband, addressed a public meeting at the Friends' Meeting House in the evening."
