Abstract

"At the recent Art Congress in Edinburgh, Miss Burton read a paper on Art Teaching in Elementary Schools, in which she argued that the confining of art teaching to secondary or higher schools was beginning at the wrong end. The picture-writing of the Mexicans, the hieroglyphics of Egyptians, and the illuminated manuscripts of the Middle Ages, showed that art came before, not after literature. 'Art,' says Miss Burton, 'is the great civiliser.'"
